THE CERTAINTY & SECURITY OF OUR SALVATION IN JESUS Kent Smith (3/19/23)
The Certainty and Security of our Salvation in Jesus Christ
Can I know for certain that I am saved?
YES!!
What is the evidence that you have been born AGAIN?
You are spiritually alive. (Eph 2:4-5)
You have a spiritual understanding (1 Cor 2:12-14)
You hear the words of God. (John 8:47)
The Spirit of God dwells in you. (Romans 8:9)
What is the evidence that you have been born?
You are alive, You breathe, you persist, you have thought and will.
Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved),
1 Cor 2:12-14 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. 14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
John 8:47 He who is of God hears the words of God;
Romans 8:9 However, you are not in the fleas but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
How can I be sure I will stay saved?
THE TESTIMONY OF SCRIPTURE
We are born again by the will of God (John 1:12-13)
Whoever believes in Him will have ETERNAL life. (John 3:15-16)
God will not judge those whom He has saved. (John 5:24)
You have been born of the Spirit. (John 3:5-6)
You have been sealed by the Spirit. (Eph. 1:13-14)
You have been identified as God’s own possession (1 Peter 2:9)
John 1:12-13 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
IF GOD HAS BIRTHED YOU AGAIN - THEN YOU HAVE BEEN SPIRITUALLY BORN
John 3:14-16 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Eternal life (to be eternal by definition) must have no end, no death, no separation from the Author of Life - Or it wasn’t eternal to begin with.
Jesus didn’t say that if you believe you might have eternal life, for a while - Or that eternal life was a possibility so long as you behaved.
He said whoever believes WILL HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. (Period)
John 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
Jesus says that those who believed DO NOT COME INTO JUDGEMENT!
THEY HAVE PASSED OUT OF DEATH INTO LIFE - (passed is in the past tense - it has already happened! It cannot unhappen!)
When He forgave our sins, He forgave all of them, past, present, and future.
When He gave us life, He gave a life that will not end! (EVER)
If we can lose our salvation by sinning too much, or by disobedience, or by any other decision of human will, then Jesus was lying when He said “we will not come into judgement, and that we had passed out of death” But Jesus (who is God in the flesh) does not lie.
Titus 1:2 God cannot lie
Hebrews 6:18 It is impossible for God to lie
John 3:5-6 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit
YOU CANNOT BE UNBORN
Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation - having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view of the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
YOU CANNOT BE UNSEALED
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a CHOSEN RACE, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR GOD’S OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
YOU CANNOT BECOME LOST SINCE YOU ARE HIS POSSESSION
HOW CAN I BE SAVED?
“Whoever BELIEVES will have eternal life.”
WHAT MUST I BELIEVE?
The GOSPEL
THE GOSPEL
REPENT
There is a God and I have sinned against Him. I have not acknowledged His reality, nor shown Him the respect, adoration, obedience, and worship He rightly deserves. I have earned His wrath and punishment for eternity.
His justice demands that all sinful rebellion be punished, and the punishment of His choosing is death, and separation from Him. It is not less than I deserve.
BELIEVE
But God in His great grace and mercy provided a way to reconcile us to Himself.
God sent His Son Jesus to earth to live a holy and sinless life, so that Jesus could be put to death, and thus satisfy God’s wrath against sin and sinners.
He invites us to trust in the sinless life of Jesus, and His death on the cross as our personal substitute.
Jesus proved His divine Sonship with the Father and demonstrated His power over death by rising from the grave and coming to life again.
He promises that all those who believe in Him and what He did on our behalf, will be reconciled to God through His sacrifice and resurrection.
Furthermore, that if we believe, He will give us a new life, a spiritual life, an everlasting and eternal life, FOREVER. We will be reconciled to God, NOT BASED on our good deeds, our our faithful efforts, or our spiritual piety. We are reconciled to God because He has chosen to show us His grace, kindness, and mercy in Jesus in spite of our sin!
NOW IF THIS MAKES SENSE TO YOU TODAY, IF YOU ARE SITTING THERE SAYING “I GET IT”. THEN UNDERSTAND THAT GOD IS ALREADY AT WORK IN YOU.
John 6:44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will rais him up on the last day.
1 Cor 2:14 a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
If you “get it” today, then His spirit is at work in you right now. I encourage you to surrender to the work of God in you right now.
Repent: Forsake your control, your wisdom, your will, your sin.
Believe: That Jesus died to give you new life.
Accept the truth that God is at work in your life right now, and He is seeking to form a new relationship with you governed by His love, and grace, and mercy.
Romans 10:9 Confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
