“You Asked for It” — What about Predestination? ……..10-15-17

“You Asked for It”                       10-15-17

What does the Bible teach about Predestination? |
We believe God sovereignly chooses individuals to eternal
life because this is what the Scriptures plainly teach.
When the Old Testament speaks of God choosing a people,                                                                                                                                                                   it is never vague or unclear.
                                        Deuteronomy 7:6-8
                                                  Based on God’s Love
                                        Exodus 33:18-19
Based on the Glory of God
God is far more sovereign, far more holy, and far more                                                                                                                                                                            glorious than we will ever know.
                                        Ephesians 1:3-4
“Before the foundation of the world”
                                        Acts 13:48
“And as many as were appointed to eternal life believed”
                                        Romans 11:7
                                            “The elect obtained it”
Man is far more sinful, far more rebellious, and far more dead                                                                                                                                                             than we realize.
                                        Ephesians 2:1-3
                                        Romans 3:10-12
                                        II Corinthians 4:3-4
Jesus is the center of our salvation.
|                                        Ephesians 1:7
|                                        Ephesians 2:4-7
The call to repentance is genuine.
                                        Matthew 11:28-30
                                        Mark 1:15
                                        Matthew 22:1-10, 14|
                    How should we view predestination?
                              As a comfort
                                        Romans 8:29-30
God has always acted for the good of those whom He called to Himself
As a reason to praise God
                                        Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14
“To the praise of His glory”
                              As confidence in missions
                                        John 6:37
                                        II Timothy 2:10

   IN THE BEGINNING               10-8-17
                    WHAT TO BELIEVE?
          In the Beginning….
                    Genesis 1:1  —    God Created
“Thousands of experiments, and all of the recently gained knowledge of molecular biology and genetics, have only served to
strengthen the most fundamental law of biology: ‘omni cellules’ (all cells come from other cells), also known as the Law of

                                                                          The Differing Viewpoints:
                           YOUNG EARTH                                                                                            OLD EARTH

The consensus of ancient historical records                              In recent years, the overwhelming opinion
from varying cultures estimate the age of the                           of the scientific community has been that the
earth as beginning between 7000 BC & 3500 BC                       earth is 4.5 billion years old based on radio-                                                                                                                                                                                        metric dating of meteorite fragments.
The consensus of early Biblical scholars estimate                                                                                                                                                                            the age of the earth as beginning between 5500 BC
Alternate Biblical positions adopted to                                                                       and 3800 BC.                                                                                           accommodate an old earth:
The straightforward chronology as recorded in the                     Theistic Evolution
Bible estimates the origin at about 4400 BC                                    The Gap Theory                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        The Day / Age Theory

                                                 Death is Due to Sin
                                                 (It’s a punishment)
“…but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die (Genesis 2:17)
“Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.” (Genesis 3:17)
“…for dust you are and to dust you will return.”  (Genesis 3:19)
“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sinand so death spread to all men, because
all sinned.”  (Romans 5:12)

Death and corruption prior to Sin
If it is so, then death is part of God’s creation that is declared “very good”  (Genesis 1:31)
Death, animals eating other animals, thorns, cancer, tumors, and so on are not very good, and yet, these are found in fossil layers.
If the fossil layers represent millions or billions of years of life before the origins of man, (and man’s sin) then these too must be
part of God’s “very good” creation.

                                           So what about the dinosaurs?
They lived on earth with mankind
Some may have gone extinct prior to the flood
Those that were not extinct would have been on the ark
Not every species of animal, but two of every kind                                                                                                                                                                                  Likely that some living dinosaurs became the creatures of legend                                                                                                                                                                        Dragons, Leviathon, sea monster (Genesis 1:21, Job 3, 7, 41, Psalm 74, 104, 148;                                                                                                                                    Isaiah 27, 51; Ezekial 29, 32)                                                                                                                                                                                            Since coming off the ark, it appears that dinosaur species have gone extinct

                                              Science & Historical Science
SCIENCE is best suited for making sense of the observable world. Scientific research in its purest forms must be                                                                                     (1) observable, (2) predictable, and (3) repeatable.
HISTORICAL SCIENCE is the work of historians gathering the best evidence of scientists from many fields of                                                                                   research to provide histories or accounts of the past.
Historical Science is fundamentally problematic because: (1) the past is not observable, and (2) the original                                                                         conditions of the past are often assumed, (3) the assumption is made that present forces and scientific                                                                    processes occur at the same rate regardless of the unobservable conditions in the past, and
                                                (4) historical science begins with the assumption that supernaturalism does not exist,                                                                                                   and even if it does, it is inoperable in the physical realm.

                                     The Testimony of the Bible
Moses believed in a literal six day creation
For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the                                     seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (Exodus 20:11)
Jesus believed in a young earth
“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’(Mark 10:6)
God spoke specifically of the six day creation
“It will be a sign between ME and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the                                         earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’ (Exodus 31:17)

                                                           Understanding the Bible
Let the Bible speak for itself
Let the Bible defend itself (let scripture confirm scripture)
Use extreme caution when permitting outside sources (particularly historical sciences) to determine the                                                                        validity of scripture                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Understand that if you believe science or the conclusions of historical science have greater authority than                                                                      the Bible, than you can no longer accept the truth of miracles, including the resurrection. (and your                                                                    faith is in vain)

     TESTING & TEMPTATION                   9-24-17
We are tempted when we are enticed by our own desires to act contrary to the will of God.
God does not tempt us   (James 1:13)
Temptation is rooted in our desires   (James 1:14)
God limits our temptations  (I Corinthians 10:13)
                                        Satan is a tempter    (Genesis 3; Matthew 4; I Corinthians 7:5)
We are tested by God to refine and strengthen our character and our faith.
                                        Examples of God Testing
                                                  God tested Abraham   (Genesis 22:1)
                                                  God tested Israel   (Exodus 20:20)
God tests us   (I Thessalonians 2:4)
                                        Reasons for Testing
                                                  To know our heart   (Deut. 8:2 & 13:3; I Thess. 2:4)
                                                  To refine us    (Psalm 66:10)
                                                  To humble us    (Ecclesiastes 3:18)
To produce certain results   (James 1:3)
Satan may test us – with God’s permission
The story of Job    (book of Job)
The demand to “sift” Peter   (Luke 22:28-34)
God never acts to provoke us to sin
Sin is the fruit of an uncontrolled desire, and an un-surrendered heart
God uses testing in our lives to refine us for His greater use

A Biblical Perspective on Divorce and Remarriage …. 9-10-17

A Biblical Perspective on Divorce and Remarriage       9-10-17
So they are no longer two, but one flesh.  What therefore
God has joined together, let no man separate.     Matthew 19:6
House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers,
but a prudent wife is from the LORD.      Proverbs 19:14
Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to                                                                                                                                              be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.   Hebrews 13:4
“I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel.     Malachi 2:16
A wife should not leave her husband, but if she does she must remain                                                                                                                                          unmarried, or reconcile with her husband.    I Corinthians 7:10-11a
A husband should not divorce his wife.     I Corinthians 7:11b
If the spouse is an unbeliever and chooses to leave, the Christian                                                                                                                                                     spouse is not required to remain with them.
This is separation, not divorce)
There are circumstances that may justify separation, such as an                                                                                                                                                      abusive spouse, or criminal activity. However, these are not a                                                                                                                                                      biblical ground for divorce.  If the offending spouse pursues a                                                                                                                                                      divorce it may certainly be accepted.
Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce                                                                                                                                                     your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way.  And I                                                                                                                                             say to you whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and                                                                                                                                                 marries another woman commits adultery.  Matthew 19:8-9
DIVORCE MAY BE PERMITTED IN THE CASE OF ADULTERY,                                                                                                                                                                                 BUT IT IS NOT REQUIRED!
The only Biblical exception to permit divorce is immorality, in particular                                                                                                                                                            sexual immorality – Sexual activity with one not your spouse,                                                                                                                                                                                          pornography, transgender activity.
God’s Word on Re-marriage
For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is                                                                                                                                                   living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning                                                                                                                                                     her husband.  So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to                                                                                                                                                 another man, she shall be called an adulteress.     Romans 7:2-3                                                                                                                                                I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and                                                                                                                                                       marries another woman commits adultery.      Matthew 19:9                                                                                                                                                                              See also: Luke 16:18; Matthew 5:32

Remarriage is permitted in the following circumstances:
BY THE LETTER OF THE LAW                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  When the former spouse has died    I Cor. 7:8-9, I Tim. 5:14, Rom. 7:2                                                                                                                                                        When the former spouse committed adultery    Matthew 19:9                                                                                                                                                               BY THE SPIRIT OF THE WORD                                                                                                                                                                                                                                When the former unbelieving spouse has abandoned the marriage and refused reconciliation.                                                                                                                                  (There is no time limit to the pursuit of reconciliation)       I Cor. 7:15                                                                                                                        When the former spouse has remarried after an unbiblical divorce, then                                                                                                                                                         they have committed adultery; only then is the aggrieved free to remarry.     Matthew 19:9, Ro. 7:2-3                                                                                           Beyond these four reasons:
Any other remarriage is a single act of adultery.
Remarriage may be permitted, but is not required.   I Cor. 7:9, I Tim. 5:1
 An Alternative to Remarriage
I wish that all of you were as I am.(single)  But each of you has your own                                                                                                                                     gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and                                                                                                                         the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.    1 Cor. 7:7-8
An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the                                                                                                                       Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can                                                                                                            please his wife— and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is                                                                                                                  concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body                                                                                                        and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how                                                                                                            she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you,                                                                                                          but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.    1 Cor. 7:32-35
Why are God’s rules on this so strict?
Marriage is a creation of God to illustrate His covenant relationship with His                                                                                                                                           chosen people Israel, and to signify the depth of love and commitment                                                                                                                                           between Jesus Christ and the church (His bride).
SEPARATION & DIVORCE: A marriage that ends in separation or divorce fails                                                                                                                                           to accomplish God’s purpose for the union, and is a sin before God.                                                                                                                                             (Though in rare cases there may be a fully innocent spouse.)                                                                                                                                                                 A CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE BLAMELESS WHEN A MARRIAGE ENDS.                                                                                                                                              However, the covenant of marriage is a covenant of love, not a contract                                                                                                                                  to enable abuse or to foster continued hostility and personal destruction.                                                                                                                     REMARRIAGE: Remarriage should be very rare. Christians should alway                                                                                                                                                         and pray for the salvation and maturation of their former spouse, and for the                                                                                                                                         reconciliation and restoration of their former marriage, until such a                                                                                                                                       result is impossible. (after the remarriage or death of the former spouse)

God & Evil                      9-3-17
                    What we know:
                              THERE IS A GOD
He is GOOD                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             He is JUST                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 He is SOVEREIGN
                              THERE IS EVIL
NATURAL EVIL (Tragic Conditions)                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Storms, Diseases, Floods, etc.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       MORAL EVIL (Sinful Behavior)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Rape, Abuse, Murder, etc.
Why does evil exist if God is truly good?
                              THE BIG PICTURE
God permitted the corruption of His creation FOR HIS GLORY
To be a platform to demonstrate His justice
To be a platform to demonstrate His grace
To be a platform to demonstrate His power
                              THE HUMAN CONDITION
God permits evil to provide us an environment in which to grow
To grow as people who seek justice                                                                                                                                                                                                                     To grow as people who demonstrate grace                                                                                                                                                                                                         To grow as people who exercise faith                                                                                                                                                                                   What the Bible has to say
John 9  The man who was blind from birth
Suffering is not always due to sin,                                                                                                                                                                                                                       But to demonstrate God’s power, (vs. 3, 32-33)                                                                                                                                                                                                 And to teach about God’s grace & justice (vs. 39)                                                                                                                                                                                   Luke 13:1-9  Two examples of death by evil circumstances
Suffering is not necessarily an indicator of God’s judgement                                                                                                                                                                         It provides an opportunity to warn people to “Repent or Perish”  (vs. 3, 5                                                                                                                                         Luke 13:10-17  Woman ill from an evil spirit
Provided a platform to demonstrate God’s grace and power, and to bring Him glory                                                                                                            Our response to Natural Evil
Show compassion to those who are suffering  (Isaiah 1:17; Colossians 3:12)
Exercise endurance and faith in the midst of suffering  (James 1:12)
Our suffering due to Moral Evil
IF it is because YOU are disobedient and not walking with God…
REPENT                      (Acts 3:19)                                                                                                                                                                                                               IF it is the result of the sinful behavior of others…
                                        OUR RESPONSE TO THE OFFENDERS
Seek justice                                                         (Isaiah 1:17)                                                                                                                                                                               Exercise forgiveness and grace                        (Matthew 6:14-15)                                                                                                                                                                     Trust God to redeem the circumstances        (Romans 8:28)
                                        OUR RESPONSE TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES
Trust God                                                                   (Daniel 3)                                                                                                                                                                             Be thankful in all things                                          (I Thessalonians 5:18)                                                                                                                                                       Be thankful for all things                                        (Ephesians 5:20)                                                                                                                                                                 Consider it all joy when you encounter trials      (James 1:2)                                                                                                                                                                           Persevere and endure                                               (James 1:3-4)

                                       TRUST GOD
In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid.                                                                                                                                                                                               What can man do to me?   Psalm 56:11

                    Trust in Him at all times, O people;                                                                                                                                                                                                               Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.   Psalm 62:8
